Join us for the Mannes Opera 2025/2026 Season Opener -- the fully staged chamber version of Kaija Saariaho’s extraordinary oratorio, La Passion de Simone, with a libretto by Amin Maalouf.
One of the 21st century’s most influential female composers, Saariaho created a work of profound contemporary relevance, engaging with themes of war, human suffering, and the philosophical contemplation of "good."
Her oratorio examines the life and work of radical French philosopher Simone Weil in 15 stations; an iteration of the Christian mediation on the 14 Stations of the Cross. Through the compelling figure of Weil, this work examines the impossibility—and the necessity—of contemplating the vast scope of human suffering with unflinching eyes. This piece will be realized in a fully staged production led by conductor Micah Gleason in partnership with Mannes Opera's Emma Griffin as director.

SENSORIUM is a multi-modal arts project exploring fundamental questions of what it means to have voice, and the nature of voice beyond language.
The project is centered around the opera, Sensorium Ex by composer Paola Prestini and librettist/poet Brenda Shaughnessy and co-directed by choreographer Jerron Herman and Jay Sheib – it is a multi-sensory narrative woven together at the intersections of disability and artificial intelligence. The Sensorium Ex Opera, commissioned by VisionIntoArt and Beth Morrison Projects, and supported by the Ford Foundation, is centered on the nature of voice beyond language, and how to creatively explore and express forms of non-speaking or non-typical patterns of speech and voice in opera. Artificial intelligence plays a role in expanding the possibilities for voice and expression in this dystopian tale.
Opera Synopsis:
A mother’s love, science/tech ethics, romance, corporate greed, a mystical escape, and a robot named Sophia come together in this story about what it means to be human...

His products changed the world and put instant connection at our fingertips. But behind tech mogul Steve Jobs was a life shaped by triumphs, trials, and contradictions.
Step into the orbit of the Apple co-founder who rose from garage genius to tech titan. With a Grammy®–winning score by Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence emeritus Mason Bates and libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning librettist Mark Campbell, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs offers an operatic journey through the interior workings and spiritual journey of an innovator. Bates merges an electronic soundscape with Campbell’s classical lyricism to immerse audiences in the world of Silicon Valley in the 1980s.
Across his life, Jobs played husband, father, spiritual seeker, and industry leader. He was also protagonist and antagonist, cycling between destruction and redemption, disillusion and reality. As Jobs comes face-to-face with his mortality, audiences will see that some things can’t be programmed—including humanity.

JOHN ADAMS: The Chairman Dances (Foxtrot for Orchestra)
THOMAS ADÈS: Violin Concerto, Concentric Paths
DVOŘÁK: Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95, From the New World
Elena Schwarz takes the podium to lead the Symphony in a program of modern masterworks by John Adams and Thomas Adès and one of Western classical music’s most beloved and recognizable works: Dvořák's Symphony No. 9. Adams composed The Chairman Dances while working on his opera Nixon in China inspired by an image of Mao Tse-Tung dancing the foxtrot. A specialist in the works of living composers, Leila Josefowicz joins the Symphony for Adès’ modern masterpiece Concentric Paths, co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic by the composer who also has many ties to – and a strong history with – California. Written while he was living in the United States, Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 drew inspiration from African-American spirituals introduced to him by his then-student, the great pioneer of American music, composer Harry T. Burleigh.
Micah serves as assistant conductor to Corrado Rovaris on Opera Philadelphia’s fall 2024 mainstage production of Missy Mazzoli’s The Listeners.
Composer Missy Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek follow up on their acclaimed 2016 world premiere Breaking the Waves with a thriller about the seductive power of cults and charismatic leaders in a divided nation.
The Listeners examines the lengths to which we, as Americans, are willing to go to find a sense of place and purpose, and the way in which confident, charming leaders can exploit these needs to their own ends.
A middle-class mother (soprano Nicole Heaston in her company debut) living in a southwestern U.S. suburb notices a “hum,” a high-frequency environmental noise that only a select few people, the "Listeners,” can hear. A community organization quickly forms to solve the mystery of the hum, but when the de facto leader (Kevin Burdette) suggests a spiritual significance, the meetings become increasingly cult-like. Is this community of “Listeners” on a collision course with destruction?

A century after winning the right to vote, how much has really changed for American women? That question lies at the heart of Grammy Award- winning singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan’s upcoming album All My Friends, set for release this March. Inspired by the letters and speeches of suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt, the album ponders the nation’s evolution amidst a lush soundscape featuring brass, orchestra, girls’ choir, and O’Donovan’s own mysterious and compelling voice. The 2022 Folk Alliance International Song of the Year winner, who was last seen at Spoleto in 2019 performing with her acclaimed trio, I’m With Her, is joined by members of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra for a musical event 100 years in the making.

The fast-paced drama unfolds both on and beyond the Gaillard stage through live video, a state-of-the-art projection system, and accompaniment by the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra under the baton of Orchestra Music Director Timothy Myers.
